Advanced Style: 14 Times Elaine Stritch Rocked the Red Carpet

Actress Elaine Stritch called herself “the wildest broad in New York,” and she played the part with aplomb. She rose to fame on Broadway in Noel Coward’s musical Sail Away and Stephen Sondhein’s Company. In 2001, at age 77, she launched a one-woman show--Elaine Stritch at Liberty--which won her a Tony Award. She also received Emmy Awards for her guest performances on Law & Order and 30 Rock, in which she played Jack Donaghy’s mother, Colleen. The New York Times wrote about her frank fondness for cigarettes, alcohol and late nights: “Ms. Stritch might be the only actor to work as a bartender after starring on Broadway, and she was completely unabashed about her good-time-girl attitude.”

Looking at photos of the outspoken star, it’s obvious she was filled with bold energy. While most celebrities pose and pout, Stritch’s defined character and delight showed up consistently on the red carpet. The huge sunglasses and monochromatic outfits only served to accent her unabashed presence. We can all get inspiration from Elaine Stritch.
