Alexis Bledel to Star in Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" Book Adaptation

Alexis Bledel is staying pretty busy after the "Gilmore Girls" revival. She just announced that there's definitely a third "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" movie on the way, and we're still not even over the bomb-drop ending of "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" yet. Although it feels like her reprise as Rory Gilmore hit us all in the feels enough to last us through all of 2017 (hello, Logan affair), Hulu just announced that Bledel will be starring in its super dramatic upcoming original series, "The Handmaid's Tale." Hold on to your hearts, y'all.

"The Handmaid's Tale" is an adaptation of a classic Margaret Atwood novel from 1985, which is set in a dystopia of the near future. Alexis Bledel will be playing Ofglen, who is the handmaid companion to Elisabeth Moss' Offred. (Moss and Bledel also worked together on AMC's "Mad Men.")

In the novel, the handmaids are women who serve the ruling class of men in a totalitarian regime by bearing the men's children. They're essentially enslaved, and the book follows the women's journey in helping each other towards liberation. The show sounds like it will be pretty spectacular, both for lovers of the book and those of us who are new to the story entirely. Hulu describes the forthcoming series:

Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values'. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

As Vulture reports, Alexis Bledel's Ofglen is, at first, a "strict rule follower" who proves to be "a subversive confidant of Offred's as time passes. Strict rule follower, huh? Maybe there's a little Rory Gilmore in every role, after all.
