We Are All About Barbie's New Look

It's probably been a while since you've purchased a Barbie, but now might be the time to invest.

On Thursday, Mattel announced three new body types for the iconic doll: petite, tall, and — drum roll, please — curvy. Not only that, but each doll is available in different skin- and hair-color combinations. Barbie's new look, which graced the cover of TIME this week, was influenced by research Mattel did on millennial moms, who said they’d been buying less Barbies because they felt they gave a negative impression to their children (sales have been down for the past four years). But the process of changing such a well-known toy was not easy — and big players like Misty Copeland and documentarian Rory Kennedy were brought in to consult.

"Will they change the world?" Kennedy said in a documentary about the new dolls. "No. But it's relevant for little girls to see a doll that looks like them."
