Find Out Companies' Maternity Leave Policies Online in This Database
When you're searching for a new job, the list of perks you look for might include an expense account, flexible work schedule, and plenty of personal days. But if you're considering starting a family, you might also want to review a company's maternity leave policy before you submit an application — and would be surprised to find very few publish such policies for public consumption. In fact, just five of Fortune 100 companies make their maternity leave policies publicly known.
Enter: The Maternity Leave Resource Center, a new searchable database of approximately 550 companies' maternity policies, created by online women's work community Fairy Godboss. Crowdsourced from thousands of female employees' anonymous tips and member reviews, the information contained on the Maternity Leave Resource Center shows a range, a consensus, and the median of different responses of paid and unpaid leave in an alphabetized database. There, you can compare competitors' policies, or search for a potential employer's offerings.
"[Most women] are extremely uncomfortable asking about maternity leave policies in an interview," Rory Newman, co-founder of Fairy Godboss, told Fortune. Her statement is backed up by a recent U.K.-based survey, which found that 78 percent of women would not ask a potential employer about its maternity leave policies during an interview.
Fairy Godboss launched in March, as cofounder Georgene Huang attempted to switch jobs while pregnant. “There is no destination where women can go to find information [about maternity leave],” she told Fortune, and no way for “the average company to know how they’re doing.”
Unable to find the resources she needed, Huang eventually suspended her own job search in favor of making public the maternity leave policies for which so many women search. “If this can mitigate a small part of the stress of being pregnant while working, then it’s worth doing,” Huang said.
A casual search of the Maternity Leave Resource Center shows The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Netflix topping the list of companies with the longest paid maternity leaves — a full year, or more. Next, according to the database, comes Adobe with 26 paid weeks of maternity leave, and FireEye Inc. and Orrick, Harrington, & Sutcliffe LLC each with 22 weeks of paid maternity leave.
