Dove Is Changing the Conversation About Our Bodies on Social Media

Dove Is Changing the Conversation About Our Bodies on Social Media

By Randy Miller

We're only human, and off-days can happen. So if any of the above phrases read familiar, it doesn't come as much of a surprise to Dove—and that's precisely the problem.

Check out Dove+Twitter’s #SpeakBeautiful campaign, which is setting out to change the conversation on social media, whether we’re talking about ourselves or others. Premiering on Sunday night (perhaps not so coincidentally during the Oscars red-carpet show), its goal is to encourage us all to turn negative tweets into something positive.

Beautiful as the project is, it’s born of a not-so-pretty reality. According to Dove, “on Twitter alone, women are 50 percent more likely to say something negative about themselves than positive, and almost three-quarters of women believe social media comments critiquing women’s beauty are destructive to their self-esteem.” Those numbers clearly need an (attitude) adjustment.

Fortunately, we can all play a major role. “Dove wants everyone to understand that the power is in our hands.” The first steps? Watching the commercial (below) and starting the conversation. Remember: It only takes one Tweet.
