Fergie on Navigating Marriage and Motherhood with an Album on the Way

With the announcement that her second solo album will drop this spring, Fergie is back in action, and she’s got several plans in place to make her music career, marriage, and motherhood work. It’s been eight years since Fergie’s last solo album, The Dutchess, but Allure’s February cover star has been hard at work in the meantime, releasing albums with the Black Eyed Peas and navigating married life.

Seven years ago, Fergie married actor Josh Duhamel. “We grew into realizing that we wanted the same things in life. We wanted the same path,” Fergie told Allure. Of course, that path requires a bit of landscaping before it’s just right: Fergie and Josh both attend therapy to keep their marriage working. Josh is "not afraid...," Fergie told Allure. "He doesn't feel like he's not man enough" for therapeutic help.To work better together, the couple also made a two-week rule—two weeks is the maximum amount of time one person can spend on the road alone. If Fergie’s on tour, Josh will join her to take care of their 14-month-old son Axl Jack part of the time. If Josh is on set, Fergie will come by for childcare duty.

While motherhood hasn’t changed Fergie’s musical feel—her new single, L.A. Love, bounces with DJ Mustard beats and the same attitude-packed notes of Fergalicious—it’s brought her down to earth.

She’s less sensitive to her critics now. “I just figure with all my stuff, some people are going to like it; some people aren’t. It’s a lot easier for me to just say, ‘F*ck it’ now!” She’s committed to relationships that nourish her, and casual about ones that don’t. Seems like a healthy combination.
