Happy Birthday, Gloria Steinem! Enjoy our MAKERS Playlist!

It's Gloria Steinem's birthday, and we thought we'd celebrate by letting our MAKERS share their personal stories of the feminist leader.

So, enjoy as MAKERS Marlo Thomas, Amy Richards, Marie Wilson, Shelby Knox and Bonnie Schaefer talk about their loyal and compassionate friend in our special birthday playlist!

Marlo Thomas shares the special bond she felt with Gloria when both were "rebelling" against societal norms by remaining unmarried at a time when even the most outspoken feminists were all married, and how their friendship has lasted to this day.

"Gloria is the most compassionate person I have ever met. Whatever she has she wants to give it to you."

Co-Founder of the Third Wave Foundation Amy Richards credits Gloria Steinem with introducing the then-collegiate to feminism when she offered the young writer a job. They maintain a close friendship and mutual mentorship to this day. Amy talks about Gloria's thought process and how she continues to inspire women to think outside the box.

"As a jounalist, Gloria gave a political voice to women."

When we asked women's rights activist Marie Wilson the most meaningful piece of advice she ever received, she shared these words from Gloria.

"Gloria Steinem was speaking, and she looked out at the audience and she said, "What I wish for you in the next ten years is that you become the man you wanted to marry.' And I think that was the most helpful thing I ever heard."

And Gloria's effect is not lost on the young and emerging generation. Tavi Gevinson, just 16 years old, honored Ms. Steinem at the MAKERS: Women Who Make America premiere by wearing a charm on her necklace that read "Gloria". Shelby Knox, who also began her activist work as a teenager and had the opportunity to room with Gloria in 2007 when the feminist leader offered her duplex as summer housing for a teen empowerment program, shares the inspiration she takes from her role model.

"She is the best organizer I have ever met."

Lastly, Bonnie Schaefer, former co-CEO of Claire's Stores, Inc., credits Gloria with helping her leave an abusive marriage and introducing her to Equality Now. She talks about Gloria's empowering effect.

"When you meet Gloria, Gloria makes you feel like you want to be the best person you could ever be."

Happy birthday, Gloria. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do.
