Emojis 2017: Hijabs, Breastfeeding, and More

Emojis 2017: Hijabs, Breastfeeding, and More

There are 56 new emojis set for release in 2017— and alongside the more lighthearted T.Rex, sandwich, and zombie icons, are some more socially and culturally significant ones.

Icons depicting breastfeeding, a woman wearing a hijab, along with gender inclusive adults and children will be featured in the update.

"In the age of digitalization, pictures prove to be a crucial element in communication," the proposal says. "Roughly 550 million Muslim women on this earth pride themselves on wearing the hijab. With this enormous number of people, not a single space on the keyboard is reserved for them."

Some icons, like the 'woman wearing a hijab' emoji have powerful back stories, too. Fifteen-year-old student Rayouf Alhumedhi proposed that particular emoji sign with the explanation that, 'roughly 550 million Muslim women on this earth pride themselves on wearing the hijab.'

With the release, Apple, Android, and Twitter hope to help users around the world feel better represented.
