Hillary Clinton Makes a Surprise Appearance to Support Katy Perry

Hillary Clinton Makes a Surprise Appearance to Support Katy Perry

Katy Perry was the center of attention throughout Tuesday evening's UNICEF Snowflake Ball, as the pop star had been chosen for the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award, recognizing her work with the organization. Perry was accompanied at her table by boyfriend Orlando Bloom and pal Allison Williams, but there was one even higher-profile supporter waiting to appear.

After a clip reel showcasing Perry’s efforts in support of UNICEF was played for the audience of roughly 800 people at Cipriani Wall Street, however, there was a major surprise, as it was announced that Hillary Rodham Clinton was on hand to present the award to Perry herself. (Perry was one of the most vocal celebrity supporters of Clinton during her candidacy, and performed at the Democratic National Convention in July.)

Clinton received a prolonged standing ovation as she made her way to the podium, while Perry’s “Roar” blasted from overhead. Dressed in a yellow jacket, Clinton — making only her second official appearance since the election — waited for just under a minute for the cheers in the room to subside before beginning her address.

"I am so grateful to have this chance to be here to really celebrate UNICEF, which has such a powerful mission." She went on, in a speech which was interrupted multiple times for applause, "On a personal level, I cannot tell you how delighted I am to be here to help celebrate . . . someone who just has the spirit and the energy and the compassion that Audrey Hepburn brought to her work for UNCIEF, someone who is a global megastar, the person who is the social-media queen, with the most Twitter followers in the world" — adding, in an apparent reference to president-elect Donald Trump — "although, she's getting some competition."

Clinton continued: " . . . Someone whose powerful voice and creative lyrics remind us when you get knocked down to get back up.” (Cue enthused cheers.) And then: “I have seen Katy’s commitment to the causes she believes in first hand. I have gotten to spend time with her; I know how deeply she cares about making our world a better place. She is serious about understanding the complex problems we face, and pulling people together to solve them. We need champions like Katy now more than ever.”

Perry — who was seen on the overhead monitor in tears during Clinton's speech — embraced Clinton for several moments (as iPhones throughout Ciprani flashed, a firework display in its own right) before making her acceptance speech. "Does anyone have a tissue?” Perry began. "I've always had a voice — a singing voice, right? — but I've never had a voice like I had before, and Hillary has lit that voice inside of me. And that light will never go out. It will continue to get brighter, and brighter, and brighter. Thank you, Hillary. You motivate me and so many millions of people; we appreciate you."

She continued, addressing the audience: "I don't know about you, but I am motivated now . . . Make some noise if you’re glad that that bubble has been burst. No more just hoping for the best and easy living; we need to come together united for the best."
