How Blake Lively is Taking Control of Her Career
In Allure’s May cover story, actor and new mom Blake Lively talks about creating a career she can control and providing for her family. As soon as she gave birth to her first child with husband Ryan Reynolds, Lively says she knew how she would prioritize: “I feel like I’ve figured out the most important thing to me,” she told Allure. “And everything supports that.”
Good thing, because she says breast-feeding baby James is a full-time job. “I’m, like, driving down the road, pumping,” she jokes. She’s not alone: Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg recounted how she used to have to pump on conference calls, something which Lively might have to engage in soon enough, as she helms her growing lifestyle site, Preserve.
Preserve is all the more important to Lively because it’s a career path that offers more security than the gig-based world of acting. ”It taps into so many of my own passions, but it also is a business that I can control,” she says. “If I can be successful at this, I have security for my family and my babies.”
Preserve also helped Lively "own the moment" she announced her pregnancy. After months of hiding her belly with oversized dresses, Lively posted a photo her brother took of her on the site. "It was a struggle, because we want to keep our privacy, but we also don't want our lives to be exploited by other people," Lively says. "So we did it simply; it was a quiet way, an elegant way."
