Jenna and Barbara Bush Wrote a Letter to Sasha and Malia Obama

Sasha and Malia Obama prepare to depart the White House after eight years, Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush have again written them a letter with advice. Just like the Obamas, the Bush sisters spent a large part of their formative years in the White House. When their grandfather George Herbert Walker Bush was sworn is as the 41st president of the United States in 1989, the Bush twins were only 7 years old. When their father, George W. Bush, was sworn in as the 43rd president in 2001, they were 19-year-old college students. So, when President Barack Obama took office in 2009, the outgoing First Daughters had years of advice to share — and they did, in a letter they read on the Today show. Now, as the Obamas’ time in the White House comes to an end, the Bushes have some more words of advice.

The letter, which Time provides in full, celebrates the years that the Obamas spent in the White House and all the ways they have grown during that time.

"In eight years, you have done so much," it begins. "Seen so much. You stood at the gates of the Robben Island cell where South Africa's Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for decades, your arms around your father. You traveled to Liberia and Morocco with your mom to talk with girls about the importance of education — girls who saw themselves in you, saw themselves in your parents, saw who they could become if they continued to study and learn."

In their 2009 letter, the Bush daughters gave the Obamas advice for all they should do, see, and attempt to accomplish during their years in the White House. They told the girls to cherish their White House animals, advised them to slide down the banister of the White House Solarium, and encouraged them to attend every possible State Dinner they could.
