J.K. Rowling Reveals Harry Potter's Family History on Pottermore

Pottermore, the website for all things Harry Potter related, has been clutch for Potter superfans — especially since the beloved books and movies came to an end. The site, which frequently drops history and tidbits about our favorite characters, just got an update today. Included in the refresh? An essay from J.K. Rowling herself detailing the Potter family history. Here are some of the most fascinating tidbits about Harry's descendants.

The family descends from a 12th century wizard named Linfred of Stinchcombe
Rowling describes him as "a locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, 'the Potterer', became corrupted in time to 'Potter.'" He built the Potter family fortune by creating a number of medicinal potion remedies, including Skele-gro and Pepperup Potion. (Harry himself received a dose of Skele-Gro when he broke his arm in the Chamber of Secrets.)

The Potters are officially connected to the Peverells, the three brothers believed to be the original possessors of the Deathly Hallows
"Linfred’s eldest son, Hardwin, married a beautiful young witch by the name of Iolanthe Peverell, who came from the village of Godric’s Hollow. She was the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell," Rowling writes.

Iolanthe brought the Invisibility Cloak into the Potter family
"In the absence of male heirs, she, the eldest of her generation, had inherited her grandfather’s invisibility cloak," Rowling writes. "It was, Iolanthe explained to Hardwin, a tradition in her family that the possession of this cloak remained a secret, and her new husband respected her wishes. From this time on, the cloak was handed down to the eldest in each new generation."

There was another Harry Potter
Henry Potter was known by his "intimates" as Harry, and served on the Wizengamot from 1913 to 1921. He was a direct descendant of Hardwin and Iolanthe, and was known for his outspokenness on behalf of the Muggle community. Henry a.k.a Harry is also Harry's great-grandfather.
