11 Times Joan Rivers Inspired Us to Own Our Individuality

September 4 marks the one-year anniversary of Joan Rivers' death.

Bold, unapologetic and fearless on and off the stage, Rivers was a trailblazer in her own right. She spoke her mind and always had the uncanny ability to hilariously articulate what we all were thinking.

Rivers embodied her own brand of feminism, and by doing so, she encouraged us to embrace our best (and worst) selves with a little more ease.

To remember the comedic icon, we've chosen 11 quotes by the late Rivers that remind us of the power of owning ourselves — flaws and all.

1. "I enjoy life when things are happening. I don't care if it's good things or bad things. That means you're alive. Things are happening."

2. "I think of opening doors not just for women comedians — I never think about women. I think just [that I'm] always trying to push for myself, push the boundaries [and] make them listen. Make them listen to the truth and laugh about it."

3. "I succeeded by saying what everyone else is thinking.”

4. "Never be afraid to laugh at yourself, after all, you could be missing out on the joke of the century.”

5. "I think of opening doors not just for women comedians — I never think about women. I think just [that I'm] always trying to push for myself, push the boundaries [and] make them listen. Make them listen to the truth and laugh about it.”

6. "I have no methods; all I do is accept people as they are."

7. "I knew I was funny, and I knew it was powerful."

8. "Nobody wants a carbon copy. You've got to believe in what you're doing."

9. "Comedy is the truth, and we should not apologize for it."

10. "Never be afraid to laugh at yourself. After all, you could be missing out on the joke of the century."

11. "Follow the trends, but follow intelligently. A little ruffle can go a long way!"
