Joe Biden Wants You to Watch This PSA About Consent to Kick Off Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted out a PSA on Tuesday, asking us to revisit the definition of consent.

Biden, who is known for his work to end sexual assault, wrote:

"The correct word for sex without consent is rape. Period. #ItsOnUs to know the signs and to stop it."

The 30-second PSA text message exchange between two friends — which are assumed to be men — taps into how we have begun to normalize rape culture and how we need to reverse it by speaking up.

With April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the PSA titled "Autocorrect" was created by Mekanism, a marketing company, for the 3-year-old "It's On Us" campaign.

"It's On Us," a campaign that Biden and Barack Obama spearheaded together, works to end sexual assault. "Autocorrect" is the first video to premiere during the "It’s On Us" Week of Action, where 300 student-hosted events take place around the country to raise awareness for sexual assault. The events will include pledge drives and group discussions focusing around consent, Refinery29 reports.

If you have experienced sexual violence and are in need of crisis support, please call the RAINN Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).
