Watch the Moment Katherine Johnson Joined the "Hidden Figures" Cast On Stage At the Oscars

MAKER Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician who calculated the trajectory for the first American space flight to orbit earth and Apollo 11 — the first human mission to the moon —  an appearance at the Oscars on Sunday night.

Brought on stage by actress Taraji P. Henson, who plays her character in "Hidden Figures" — the film that earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer), and Best Writing Adapted Screenplay.

Johnson responded to her standing ovation alongside the film's stars, Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe and said, "Thanks very much."

"Hidden Figures" tells the story of Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, the three African-American women who helped launch the first successful U.S. space mission.
