Lady Gaga Shares a Sneak Peek of Her Super Bowl Halftime Performance
Ever since we learned that Lady Gaga would be this year's Super Bowl Halftime Show performer, we've been letting our imaginations run as wild as the singer herself when it comes to the spectacle we'll take in on February 5. Gaga has already been sharing her preparations for the big performance on her social media accounts — like, for instance, the fact that she constructed a huge tent and dance floor in her own backyard so she can practice 'round the clock — but now a new behind-the-scenes video chronicling the makings of the show has been released.
Pepsi, the sponsor of the Halftime Show, just posted the first look, which features an interview with Gaga and glimpses of her routines. In the video, we see backstage prep and clips from Gaga's many past performances as the singer speaks about her anticipation of the upcoming Super Bowl. Turns out she's been planning her Halftime debut for longer than you may have thought. "It will be special because I've been planning this since I was four," Gaga says. "So I know exactly what I'm going to do."
Gaga, who sang the national anthem at last year's Super Bowl, acknowledged that performing at the Halftime Show is truly a performance on the world stage — remember all the buzz that surrounded Beyoncé's appearance in 2016? — and thus is a unique opportunity for unity. But such a famed platform, according to Gaga, also requires some individuality — something this superstar has never struggled with.
"For me it's all about giving to the fans and bringing people together that wouldn't normally come together," she says. "The thing is, it's such a big world stage in terms of how many people see it, and it's been done so many times. I think the challenge is to look at it and say, 'What can I do differently? How can I elevate certain little things here and there, and also make it about the music?' This is where I'm supposed to be."
The video also gave us a look at one of the dance routines Gaga's choreographer, Ricky Jackson, is workshopping with her handpicked crew of backup dancers. The dance in question is set to Gaga's hit "Bad Romance," so it seems that in addition to getting a taste of her newer material (her album Joanne was released in October), we can look forward to a few throwbacks.
This video has us even more psyched for Halftime! (Although with Lady Gaga involved we expected nothing less than greatness anyway.) See the sneak peek for yourself, below.
