MAKERS Women in Comedy: Up Next on PBS

MAKERS Women in Comedy: Up Next on PBS

On Tuesday, September 30, MAKERS premieres Women in Comedy, the first of six films that rewrite women into history. Narrated by Leslie Mann, the film tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Norman Lear’s Maude to the dirty jokes in The Sarah Silverman Program.

Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and we take the female stars of shows like VEEP, Parks and Rec, and Orange is the New Black for granted, but it didn’t start out that way. Women in Comedy moves through history via a range of comedians, starting with legends like Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers, leading up to contemporary comics like Margaret Cho and Chelsea Handler. When did comedy become the new rock 'n' roll, and how have women evolved with it?

Women in Comedy will be followed by five other films that explore fields where women have broken new ground. Join the storytelling revolution with Hollywood, Space, War, Business, and Politics. Tuesdays on PBS at 9/8c. If you miss the premieres, join special online screenings every Wednesday on MAKERS.com, with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the film production from the MAKERS team. Either way, tell us your thoughts @MAKERSwomen #MAKERSfilms.

Run to it!
