MAKING HISTORY: Billie Beats Bobby
In honor of Women's History Month, we are celebrating with 31 days of women's history! Every day in March, we will highlight an historic moment, as told through the personal stories of our MAKERS.
Today we highlight tennis player Billie Jean King and her unforgettable win over Bobby Riggs in 1973. In additional to being a world class tennis player, King was an outspoken activist against the longstanding disparity in prize money between male athletes and female athletes and worked to establish equal opportunities for women in tennis.
So, when Riggs challenged her to a winner-take-all game, she could not resist. The "Battle of the Sexes" game captured the nation's attention and became the perfect stage for King to make the drop-shot that would change the face of women's sports.
