MAKING HISTORY: Geraldine Ferraro Nominated for Vice President

In honor of Women's History Month, we are celebrating with 31 days of women's history! Every day in March, we will highlight an historic moment, as told through the personal stories of our MAKERS.

Today we feature Geraldine Ferraro who made history as the first female Vice Presidential candidate to represent a major American political party. MAKERS was fortunate enough to capture the incredible story from her own voice before she passed in March 2011, and we are thrilled we can share her story with our readers during Women's History Month.

From earning a law degree at night while teaching elementary school, to earning the Democratic Vice Presidential nomination in the 1984, Ferraro's story shows her great tenacity. She was not only the first woman to appear on either major party's presidential ticket, but also the first Italian American! With her thick skin and humor, Ferraro brushed past the unprecedented scrutiny she received throughout the race.

Despite losing the election, Ferraro's run altered the future for women:

"It did make a difference. We pulled down the sign for the door of the White House that says 'male only.'"
