MAKING HISTORY: Gloria Steinem Creates Ms. Magazine
In honor of Women's History Month, we are celebrating with 31 days of women's history! Every day in March, we will highlight an historic moment, as told through the personal stories of our MAKERS.
Today we celebrate Gloria Steinem and the founding of the groundbreaking magazine, Ms. On newsstands in 1972, the magazine was the first mainstream publication of its kind to speak honestly and directly about real women's issues, including being the first magazine to tackle domestic abuse. And it most certainly struck a chord. 300,000 test copies sold out in eight days and generated 26,000 subscription orders within weeks.
Steinem recalls about the women's movement. "It took us a long time to be taken seriously enough to be opposed." Ms. magazine helped elevate the movement from being an object of ridicule to becoming a serious force to be reckoned with.
