MAKING HISTORY: Sara Hurwitz Becomes First Female Orthodox Rabbi
In honor of Women's History Month, we are celebrating with 31 days of women's history! Every day in March, we will highlight an historic moment, as told through the personal stories of our MAKERS.
Today we spotlight the first female Orthodox Rabbi, Sara Hurwitz. Interested in Jewish studies at an early age, Hurwitz initially thought it was impossible for her to become an Orthodox rabbi. Nevertheless she pursued her passion, and it became clear there was room in the traditional space for a female spiritual leader.
A role model for women studying Jewish law, Hurwitz has proven to the next generation of women in her community that they can make change:
"I think it's rather exciting to be able to push the envelop from within and try to make space from within my community rather than giving up."
