Meet Mariah Idrissi, the First Hijab-Wearing Model to Be Featured in an H&M Ad
Mariah Idrissi, 23, is helping to raise the bar for diversity in the fashion industry.
When she first heard the news about being featured in a new ad campaign for H&M, she responded with, "Are you sure the know I wear a hijab?" reported Fusion. She is one of several characters in a short film for H&M called, "Close the Loop." The campaign continues to champion for diversity by featuring an amputee model, plus-sized models, a Gulf Sheikh and a group of Sikh men. The main focus of the ad campaign highlights recycling clothing.
While discussing her new-found attention, she says: "It might be because hijab fashion has boomed in the last few years and to finally see a hijabi [a woman who wears a hijab] in mainstream fashion is a big achievement."
Idrissi was discovered by H&M through her Instagram account. She decided to wear a hijab when she was 17. For most young Islamic girls, they begin wearing it at puberty. She expresses that elements of her Islam faith have a always been a part of her life.
