Marin Alsop, Carrie Brownstein, Claudia Chan and Maritza Alarcón Join MAKERS!

We recently welcomed four new MAKERS to our community! Joining the remarkable MAKERS already in our community, we added two musicians: the groundbreaking Marin Alsop, as well as Sleater-Kinney's multitalented Carrie Brownstein. We also added Claudia Chan, a forward-thinking entrepreneur and the youth empowerment organizer, Maritza Alarcón.

Marin Alsop is a groundbreaking musician who, despite being told “girls don’t do that,” became the first female conductor of a major American orchestra. She shares what it was like being raised by musician parents, studying under Leonard Bernstein, and her take on gender in the 21st century as the Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony.

Carrie Brownstein is a musician and actor currently playing with band Wild Flag and co-starring in sketch comedy show, Portlandia. She talks about the arduous struggle to simply be known as a musician without the modifier “female” and the layered meaning of feminism. Brownstein also confesses where her confidence comes and why she wants to “move through the world boldly.”

Claudia Chan is founder of, a media site that puts remarkable women in the spotlight. She talks about living up to your greatness by figuring out what you want and going for it. Big. Chan advises achieving life goals strategically, as if mapping out a business plan.

Maritza Alarcón is a youth empowerment organizer. As a senior in college, Alarcón co-created M.O.V.E., Motivation Opportunity Viability Enterprise, Inc., out of the desire she had to educate the next generation on what she wished she had known herself. Alarcón talks about strength, beauty, and why sometimes you have to be your own role model.
