The Medal of Freedom List: MAKERS Who Have Received the Honor Since 1993

First established by former President Harry Truman in 1945 to "recognize notable service by civilians during World War II," the Medal of Freedom has since been re-established as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which reached a larger audience of deserving recipients.

Initially expanded by former President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the honor now recognizes "individuals who have made 'an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."

Many who have received the award are dedicated, passionate women who have changed culture in countless indescribable ways. Women with backgrounds like Maya Angelou to Pat Summitt.

With this in mind, and the knowledge of several of this year's awardees, we looked back at those who have been honored since the 1990s. And, not surprisingly, several of our very own MAKERS have accepted the honor.
