Michelle Obama Calls Out the Trump Administration’s Nutrition Policy

Michelle Obama may no longer be the First Lady of the United States, but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to rally for the causes she championed while in the White House: namely, for nutrition. The former FLOTUS—who devoted much of her time in Washington to promoting healthy eating and fitness with Let’s Move!—made a rare public speaking appearance on Friday to discuss the importance of nutrition in the wake of the Trump administration’s regulatory rollback that delays new menu-labelling rules and nutrition labels, as The Washington Post reports.

“Keep families ignorant. That’s all I’m hearing,” Michelle Obama told Sam Kass, a former White House assistant chef who served as the first executive director for Let’s Move. In her remarks, Obama was specifically referring to Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue’s recent announcement that he would be doing away with some of her healthy-eating initiatives, like requiring school meals to have no salt, fewer grains, and low-fat or nonfat milk only, as The Los Angeles Times notes. Secretary Perdue’s actions have also caused the delay of new nutrition labels. “You don’t need to know what’s in your food,” Obama said. “You can’t handle that, Mom. Just buy this, be quiet, spend your money—don’t ask us about what’s in your food.”

To make her plea even stronger, Obama attempted to remove herself from the healthy initiative to emphasize its importance. “Take me out of the equation—like me or don’t like me,” she said. “But think about why someone is OK with your kids eating crap. Why would you celebrate that? Why would you sit idly and be okay with that? Because here’s the secret: If someone is doing that, they don’t care about your kid.”

Her biggest jab at the Trump administration, though—without referring to any names—came later in her talk. “You take your eye off the ball on things, you let other people determine what you’re eating, what you’re feeding, how you’re moving—and before you know it, your kids have type 2 diabetes, and you’re confused and shocked and hurt,” she said, to which she followed up with: “I hope you have health care.”
