MAKERS Takes Action in Support of First Lady Michelle Obama and the Let Girls Learn Initiative by Announcing New Anthem "This Is For My Girls"
Today, MAKERS takes action in response to a call to action by First Lady Michelle Obama in support of Let Girls Learn with the release of the brand new song “This Is For My Girls.” Let Girls Learn is a U.S. government-wide initiative launched by the President and First Lady which seeks to help the more than 62 million girls around the world who are not in school, go to school and stay in school.
The song will serve as an anthem for Let Girls Learn. "This Is For My Girls" was written by Oscar® nominee Diane Warren and features vocal performances from Chloe x Halle, Jadagrace, Janelle Monae, Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Rowland, Lea Michele, Missy Elliott and Zendaya.
"Diane Warren and this collective of powerful, talented artists have truly taken action in support of Let Girls Learn," said First Lady Michelle Obama. “I am thrilled that they’ve created this anthem for the 62 million girls around the world who are not in school, and that AOL’s MAKERS and iTunes joined them in their support."
In conjunction with the release of “This Is For My Girls,” The First Lady will be delivering the SXSW Music Keynote Conversation tomorrow at 10:30 AM CT/ 11:30 AM ET / 8:30 AM PT and Chloe x Halle will perform the song live for the first time. The address will be a group discussion with the First Lady, Missy Elliot, Sophia Bush and Diane Warren, moderated by Queen Latifah and streamed live on MAKERS.com. This powerhouse group of women bring their collective years of experience to the table for a dialogue on passion, music, and the importance of girls’ education everywhere.
"We could not be more excited to be part of such an important initiative that aligns so strongly with our own mission of empowering women," said MAKERS Vice President Samantha Leibovitz. “We hope the song inspires and drives people to act."
MAKERS is the Executive Producer of "This Is For My Girls" and has coordinated amplification efforts for the launch of the song as well as released a new PSA to raise awareness for the revamped 62MillionGirls.com. All proceeds from US iTunes purchases of "This Is For My Girls" will support the Peace Corps Let Girls Learn Fund. All partners on the song including Diane Warren, Apple, Motown, the artists and their respective labels, have donated their proceeds in support of Let Girls Learn.
