Minka Kelly Talks International Women’s Day
To celebrate International Women's Day, Minka Kelly teamed up with the charitable organization fashionABLE, which works to provide women in Africa with high-quality, stable jobs making artisan crafts—and Kelly worked with its staffers on designing a chic clutch ($78) that's available today. "We are all about empowering women, [so launching the bag on] International Women's Day just made a lot of sense," Kelly says.
Back in 2009, Kelly first worked with FashionABLE and traveled with them to Ethiopia. There, she says, “I learned a lot about courage and sacrifice. So I knew [FashionABLE] was something I had to continue to be a part of for as long as I possibly could—if not the rest of my life.”
On her most recent visit to Africa in 2014, Kelly met with the local women, “and they were showing me all the ways they’ve grown,” she says. “When I first visited, they were making greeting cards and candles, and then they were making scarves, and now they’re making leather goods. I got so excited by both the work they were doing and how beautiful the craftsmanship was. I said, ‘Let’s make something! Can we make something together? Can I help?’”
Kelly wanted to help collaborate on a brand-new item to FashionABLE’s collection, so they went with a clutch (which doubles as a sweet cosmetics case, too.) The team ndubbed the style “Hibret,” which means “collaboration” in Amheric, the traditional language of Ethiopia. Here’s a pic:
Why we love it: You can use it for everything. And Kelly agrees. “If you want casual, if you want dressy, if you want a clutch, if you want a cosmetic bag—whatever you need, you can buy something that is beautiful that will also keep a woman's life a life of dignity,” she says.
And what more could you want?
