Nichelle Nichols to Go On NASA Flight

Although it's been years since Nichelle Nichols played Lt. Uhura on the original "Star Trek," that doesn't mean she's done with space for good.

During her recent Reddit AMA, she revealed that she will be a passenger aboard an upcoming flight of NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, also known as SOFIA. The aircraft has a powerful telescope that's used to study the Earth's atmosphere, view comets, and much more.

Nichols did clarify that SOFA will not actually go beyond the Earth's atmosphere into space: "SOFIA does not, sadly, fly into space," she said. "It's an airborne observatory, a massive telescope mounted inside a 747 flying as high as is possible. I was on a similar flight, the first airborne observatory, back in 1977. It's an amazing experience, you get a totally different perspective than from Earth. I do hope someone gets some great pictures."

She and the rest of the SOFIA passengers will take off on September 15.
