On This Day: 21-Year-Old Alicia Keys Won Five Grammys

The year is 2002, and we find ourselves at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. Jamie Foxx, Pamela Anderson, and Ja Rule present the nominees for Best R&B album. The winner is Alicia Keys, for Songs in A Minor! She touches hands with Bono as she walks up to the Grammy stage, her baby blue veil flaring behind her.

“I would like to dedicate this to thinking outside the box, not being afraid to be who you are, no matter what anybody says,” 21-year-old Alicia Keys says. She’ll win four other awards this night, including Song of the Year for “Fallin” and Best New Artist.

In the years after this Grammy Awards, she’ll become one of the top-four Grammy winners in the country, joining Aretha Franklin and Alison Krauss. Meet the rest of the top 10 Grammy-winning women in the slideshow above.
