Photographer Captures the Beauty of Children With Down Syndrome
Photographer Julie Wilson has the pleasure of capturing beautiful moments and milestones in people's lives with each image that she takes.
Now, she's using her lens to specifically capture the beauty of children with Down syndrome.
Wilson's sister Dina was born with the syndrome, and she considers her life to have been "greatly blessed by growing up" with Dina.
"Dina was the best thing that could have ever happened to our family," Willson told Pop Sugar. "She taught us what true unconditional love is and how to go through life without worries. She would light up any room that she walked into, and people were always drawn to her sweet yet stubborn personality."
People with Down syndrome often face other health complications, and in 2011 at the age of 35, Dina passed away from congestive heart failure – a disease common in people with Down syndrome.
While the loss of her sister was hard to bear, Wilson decided to she wanted to help others appreciate people with Down syndrome and see them for their uniqueness and beauty.
Therefore she started an incredible photo series of children who were just like her sister.
"I want to change minds," Wilson told Pop Sugar.
"I want people to see these children and know that if they are having a baby who has been diagnosed with Down syndrome, although it may be scary, they will be blessed beyond words ... If you are that person who is going through the emotional roller coaster of just finding out, please know that you are about to encounter a love that surpasses all of your expectations."
