See the First Look at Emily Blunt As Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is back in the most delightful way, with Emily Blunt taking over the iconic role. And now Disney released the first glimpse of the sequel to the 1964 original musical, "Mary Poppins Returns," featuring a look at Blunt as the world's best nanny, and it's downright enchanting.

The image shows Blunt standing on a cobblestone street, facing the doorway of a home with her back to the camera and only part of her profile visible beneath a brimmed pink hat with bird accent. The new Mary also wears a deep blue coat complete with ruffle, not unlike Julie Andrews did in the original, and light blue gloves that cover her hands. The character's famous carpet bag makes an appearance too. The photo gives away just enough to get us unbelievably excited for the follow-up to "Mary Poppins" while leaving some of Mary's signature air of mystery to keep us in the dark about her babysitting magic.

Details about the sequel have been relatively under wraps, though we do know that it will focus on Mary's original charges, a now grown-up Michael and Jane, who are still in need of some cheering up from their former nanny. The film is set in 1930s Depression-era London and chronicles Mary's return to the Banks home on Cherry Tree Lane after Michael, who's now a father of three, suffers a personal loss. Also set to appear in the film are Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays a streetlamp lighter, Meryl Streep as Mary’s cousin Topsy, Colin Firth as a banker William Weatherall Wilkins, and Julie Walters, who takes on the role of the housekeeper Ellen. Dick Van Dyke, who starred in the original "Mary Poppins" as chimney sweep Bert, will also make a special appearance in the new film.

Don't go fly a kite just yet, though. There's still quite a long wait before Mary will once more float down from the sky via umbrella: "Mary Poppins Returns" is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day 2018.
