Sheryl Sandberg Helps Shatter Stereotypes in Advertising With Glass Lion Award

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity celebrates outstanding achievements in advertising. Each year, innovative ads are recognized among a wide range of categories from product design to public relations.

Thanks to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, a new category joins the celebrated ranks. According to the festival's website, advertising that honors "implicitly or explicitly addresses issues of gender inequality or prejudice" are qualified to win the Glass Lion award. Let's just say that Sandberg took a literal approach to shattering the glass ceiling on gender issues. 

"Marketing that depicts women and men as equals  instead of reinforcing clichés  isn't just good for society, it's also good for business," Sandberg told Business Insider in an email. "Advertising not only reflects culture, it has the power to shape it  so it's exciting to see agencies and brands creating content that shatters gender stereotypes."

The first ever Glass Lion Grand Prix award went to BBDO India for Whisper's "Touch the Pickle" campaign. The main focus of the campaign is aimed to ban the stigma around menstruation among Indian society.
