Shonda Rhimes Continues Her Takeover of ABC, the World

At some point, Shondaland and ABC prime time are going to become synonymous — and that day just got one step closer, as the network greenlit another Shondaland pilot on Wednesday. Get ready for a legal drama that follows newbie lawyers in the Southern District of New York (S.D.N.Y.) Federal Court — whose lives, of course, are all connected — as they tackle extremely high-profile cases and, perhaps, find themselves in over their heads. (Yes, go ahead and start humming the Fray now.)

According to Deadline, "Scandal" scribe Paul William Davies has been tapped to write as well as executive produce the series alongside Rhimes and Betsy Beers, Rhimes's production partner.

For those keeping track at home, Deadline notes that this will be the sixth Shondaland show to land on ABC’s current lineup: in order, we already have "Grey’s Anatomy," "Scandal," "How to Get Away with Murder," "The Catch," and "Still Star-Crossed," which will premiere next year.

You can hardly blame ABC for stocking up on Shonda: Grey's remains one of the network’s best-rated series, and while "Scandal" and "How to Get Away with Murder" ratings have seen better days, they’re still front-runners, or at least tough contenders, in their respective time slots. Still, it’s important to remember that not everything Rhimes touches turns to gold: let us not forget the fallen angels, "Private Practice" — which, to be fair, lasted for six years — "Off the Map," which only made it one season, and "Gilded Lilys," which never got picked up after shooting its pilot. Regardless, it’s very safe to say audiences still love them a good Shondaland joint and, thus, so does ABC.

Lest we forget, one of Rhimes’s brightest stars, Kerry Washington, also has her her own upcoming series on the way: "Patrol." Washington will step behind the camera once more as a producer for that series, giving ABC yet another show with dark secrets at its core — and viewers even more of what they know and love.
