This Short Film Allows Young Girls of Color to Imagine Themselves As Ballerinas

"High Above" is a four-minute short film collaboration about black ballerinas by the Dance Theatre of Harlem and India.Arie.

The short and powerful clip emphasizes the power of art as it features a young black girl who attends the ballet alone and is inspired to become a ballerina following her grandmother's passing.

The clip allows young girls of color to envision themselves as ballerinas after seeing ballerinas of color on stage who represent and resemble themselves.

After the performance, the dancer gives the amazed young girl her shoes and the young girl starts dancing with the aspirations of becoming a ballerina.

The Dance Theatre of Harlem has a mission to present racial diversity and this film achieved just that. Watch the clip below.
