Legendary Tennessee Basketball Coach Pat Summitt Has Died at 64
Legendary basketball coach Pat Summitt died on Tuesday at the age of 64. As coach of the University of Tennessee's women's basketball team, Summitt led the Lady Vols to 1,098 victories and eight national championships, all the while bringing a once overlook sport — women's college basketball — to the national arena. Here, we remember the sports icon with a reprinting of her 1998 Glamour Women of the Year profile below.
"I like to win," says Pat Summitt, coach of the University of Tennessee's women's basketball team. So does everyone else — it's just that Summitt likes winning the way the rest of us like oxygen. This season, her Lady Volunteers crashed through their season with 39 wins and no losses, not only winning their third consecutive national championship (for a total of six such titles) but also making Summitt one of the two winningest coaches, male or female, in NCAA history.
Like the best male coaches, she attracts the fans (more than 10,000 to every game), earns the big bucks (she is reportedly the highest-paid women's coach in America) and creates superstars (among them, 1998 world champion team member Chamique Holdsclaw). Even her competitors admit that she's created the best women's team in history, and not by being a pussycat: She shouts her way through the games, runs killer practices and holds team members to sky-high academic standards. But the most sought-after players want a Tennessee jersey — and it's all because of her.
Summitt has turned down offers to coach men's teams. "Why is that perceived as a step up?" she asks. She's also been told she should run for governor. "I already have important work," she responds. "Redefining what young women are capable of."
