Times Union Profiles Barbara Smith

Feminist scholar and community activist, Barbara Smith, spoke with on her involvement in the MAKERS series. The Albany-based publication, was likely motivated by hometown pride. Smith, chosen as part of the MAKERS: Women Who Make America series is a resident and Common Council member in New York’s capital city.
Smith was an early part of the MAKERS project, serving as an academic advisor to filmmakers Betsy West, and Dyllan McGee, whilethey made their selections. She is also a close friend of the project’s impetus, Gloria Steinem.  Smith and Steinem collaborated as editors on the 1998 reference book, “The Reader’s Companion to Women’s History,” published by Houghton Mifflin.
