This Week's Theme: Identity & Self-Expression

Pride Month

June is LGBT Pride Month, an annual month-long event in the United States to spread awareness about discrimination and violence towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals. President Bill Clinton first declared June as “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month) in 2000, to pay tribute to the Stonewall Riots which occurred in June 1969. President Obama extended the commemoration to persons who are bisexual or transgendered in 2009.

To honor the month-long celebration, we have decided to set our theme for the first full week of June as “Identity & Self-Expression.” We’ve chosen these words intentionally. Pride Month is not only about one’s orientation. It is about the ability to identify, express, and live one’s life without fear of being hurt or intimidated. We’ve also extended our theme to include other self-identified social groups who have fought for their right to be accepted by the broader culture. If you follow our Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus accounts, you might see videos featuring women discussing gender or racial discrimination they faced when trying to fit in at high school, find a job, and accomplish their dreams.
