What 10 Successful Women Carry in Their Bags
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, Democrat of Missouri, once told The New York Times, "I think most of us, while we may look at the cute little purses, our lives don't fit a cute little purse. Our lives fit something that is in between a purse and a briefcase, and that's what I carry."
Luckily for her, big purses were all over the Paris runways for Spring 2017, but any professional woman knows a big bag is a necessity as it truly equips us with the tools to be super heroes. Some of the most successful women carry fuel (energy bars), magic shoes (comfy sneakers) and mints (those are just good to have.)
Our supplies let us kick ass all day at work and then play hard too at night whether that be picking up the kids, networking or working out like a beast. Let's take a look.
1. Lauren Conrad
The entrepreneur carries almonds (to prevent a case of the "hangries") and a pen because "I feel like it’s more hygienic to use your own pen, plus I like how this one writes. I’m not a germaphobe, I just think it’s a good idea…"
2. MAKER Hillary Clinton
The Presidential nominee really does tote hot sauce in her bag and she did it even before Beyonce made it cool. The brand she loves is Ninja Squirrel, a Sriracha from the in-house brand of Texas-based Whole Foods Market. "And we continue to carry chili flakes and jalapeños around," says Clinton campaign spokesperson Nick Merrill.
3. Camila Alves
The model and entrepreneur says she always carries, "My keys, my cellphone. As a mother you cannot go without a cellphone — forget about that! And a lip balm, and a floss. I’m a big floss person — I can't go without a floss!"
4. Olivia Pope
OK, so Olivia isn't real but the woman who plays her, the magnificent Kerry Washington is, and she believes this is what Olivia would carry: "In Olivia's bag are very similar things: phone for sure. Wallet. I bet she has mints in her bag. I feel like Olivia's a mint person."
5. Ivanka Trump
The designer and founder of career site IvankaTrump.com says, she always has a Kind Bar, and Tic Tacs in her bag as well as "a fortune teller fish from Mermaid Inn (I'm passionate — go figure), my sunglasses, a movie ticket sub from Whiplash, yesterday's WWD that I still haven't read (Joseph got artistic with it last night at dinner), Essie nailpolish in Topless (racy!), Frends headphones, my favorite Chanel blush and Tilleul Cédrat scented towelettes (for attacking the city grime with a little bit of glamour)."
6. Rachel Zoe
The designer and founder of The Zoe Report always has her "Oversized sunnies—I can’t leave the house without them! They’re part of my uniform." Are you surprised?
7. MAKER Ruth Bader Ginsburg
In her MZ Wallace tote, which she got as a gift from Glamour, she usually carries the constitution (she does reference it regularly after all.)
8. Jessica Alba
The Honest Company founder and mother of two always has band-aids and made her own travel kit by combining all of her favorite travel kits she has collected over the years.
9. Tory Burch
The designer carries many special and meaningful items in her purse like a red ribbon. "I always carry a red ribbon for luck. It was a superstition that was handed down from my great-grandmother, and all my relatives carry one. Today I even give them to friends for good luck. Mine is a grosgrain — I can't get on a plane without it." She also always has her Smythson diary: "I'm old-fashioned about writing things down, so I have this notebook to jot down any ideas." And then plus her iPad and a tennis ball. "I love tennis, so you never know when a tennis ball will show up in my bag! I play every day in the summer when I'm out on Long Island. My three brothers and I grew up playing together, and now my boys do, too."
10. Kelly Rowland
The singer and media personality says always carries Lysol. "I'm kind of a germ freak. When I get on a plane, I spray my seat and everything with Lysol Disinfectant Spray."
