Why Do Women Support Trump? 12 of His Supporters Explain
Donald Trump's campaign has not made outreach to women voters a priority, to put it mildly. The Republican presidential front-runner has insulted rivals, women reporters, the wives of fellow candidates, and he has a long, documented history of making misogynistic statements.
His campaign manager has been charged with assaulting a female reporter.
At an event, the night before the Wisconsin primary, his wife Melania said he would "punch back 10 times harder" at anyone who dared to attack him. Even with support for Trump among women at less than 30 percent, there are many who are excited about a possibleTrump presidency, and they're a surprisingly diverse group from all over the country.
Twelve women from four states told Glamour why they're voting for Donald Trump. One common theme? Despite the fact that women are on the receiving end of his tirades, many of the women interviewed said they appreciated his outspoken, take-no-prisoners approach.
Here are what some of his fans have said.
Amanda Fletcher, 33, Deerfield Beach, Fla., nurse
"I'm supporting Trump for actually everything that he stands for — making coming to America to be legal, illegal immigration, bringing our jobs back, being more tough on ISIS and terrorists. Everything, from A to Z. I think if you look back to the way he spoke 20 years ago, what he had to say, his whole career, he's just been tough on everybody. Look at the way his children were brought up, look at the way he runs his business. He's a stand-up citizen, he's a stand-up businessman, he's a world class polite gentleman, and he gets it done."
Brittany Moore, 17, Twin Lakes, Wisc., high school senior
"I like his tax plan. I work a job at Target [at cash register] and I've worked there for about a year and a half, and once I started working there and seeing the money taken out of my paycheck and seeing where my tax money goes, that's what really gets me into it. And then my parents, with their taxes — they pay a lot in their taxes, and I just don't think that's right, if someone works hard, they shouldn't have to give up that much of their income toward welfare and such."
Ariana Budde, 17, Kenner, La., high school senior
"I'm supporting Trump because he helps people who are in the workforce, and he supports people taking home what they make and the money they earn…People work hard, they go to school to do their job, and they should be able to take home all the money that they earn. I'm going to college. I'm going to get a job in the medical field and I think going to school for that long I should be able to take home as much as I make."
Jennifer Fresard, 39, Del Ray Beach, Fla., marketing agency owner
"The key reason that I'm supporting Trump is probably because I am, like everyone else, fed up with the politics and the politicians. Being a small business [owner] and trying to succeed, I just really think his message is what we need right now…I just think that he's going to support us. I love the fact that he wants to keep jobs here, and I think that's the number one thing that I'm supporting."
Nicole Rossetti, 23, Charlotte, N.C., community college student
"I'm all about honesty and I think he's honest, and he's not a fake. I think he just tells it how it is. A lot of other politicians just don't speak the truth. I think they cover up just to get a vote in. I think there's something different about him that people are feeling. Like they're telling about that Trump movement — I really do believe in it. Look at this all these young people around here. I don't see that many when it comes to the older politicians."
Patricia Behrens, 28, Chalmette, La., waitress
"I like Trump because he's not a politician. He was never a governor or anything like that. I think politics — to me, it's all about the money and Trump has his own money, so he's not after the money; he's after the country."
Sinetria Hudson, 41, New Orleans, customer service/temp worker
"I'm supporting Trump because I like that you know what you're getting, you know who he is…there are no surprises, he doesn't change his voice, he doesn't try to sound like certain groups of people. There will be no surprises. I like the fact that he is able to challenge the establishment."
Victoria Breedlove, 37, Charlotte, N.C., rental property business owner
"I'm supporting Trump because he's promising to make America great again — that's the main point — and to secure the border. He's not the like the other politicians who just say, 'blah, blah, blah' and never do the thing that the people want to do. He's not the typical politician. I think only he can work with both parties. That's my point."
Katie Kubiak, 17, Burlington, Wisc., high school senior
"My parents have always worked really hard for their money and I just appreciate the fact that you deserve what you've worked for, and so I think that's the quality about him that I'm really drawn to. I feel like America's morals and ideals have changed over the past few years, and I feel like we just need to get back to the old American dream — everybody works for what they get, and that mentality. I feel like I don't want to be paying for other people. If it's my money, I don't want to support other people, if you know what I mean."
Maria Karampourniotis, 23, Concord, N.C., medical assisting student
"I support Trump because he's a breath of fresh air. He doesn't really care whose feelings he hurts, he just says what is on his mind and I like that. I feel like people blow smoke a lot and so it's just nice to hear somebody's real opinion instead of what they think people want to hear. I feel like too a lot of people my age aren't into politics, so it's nice to see how many people are actually into it and starting to listen — even if they don't like Donald Trump, they're actually starting to listening to what's going on and it's gotten their attention."
Mary Vento, 40, Key Biscayne, Fla., real estate agent
"I'm supporting him because he's going to create more jobs, and because he's going to build the wall. I'm from Venezuela, and I came here legally 27 years ago and I want everyone to come here to this country legally. It makes me mad because I had to go through all the paperwork, go to my country, come back here, and get the papers stamped to come legally and be able to work. And everybody's taking advantage of us."
Michelle Renaud, 37, Covington, La., operating room coordinator
"I'm supporting him because he's self-funding. He doesn't owe anyone anything. Normally you get the lobbyists and they need sponsorships, but he's funding himself. There are no favors he has to hand back to certain people, and that's the drive for me."
