Women Filmmakers and the Cannes Film Festival

IndieWire's Women and Hollywood blog has pointed out with their recent infographic (below) that although Cannes Film Festival has done a good job distracting people from the lack of women directors, the number of women directors in the main competition remains dismal: Two.

There are incredible women filmmakers out there. Like any other industry, despite all the glitz and glamor, Hollywood can be outright sexist, denying women opportunities to get their foot in their door. In fact, MAKERS will be premiering one of six new documentaries on PBS about women and Hollywood in the fall. 

Here's a look at women directors over the last decade at Cannes. Note that only one woman, the talented Jane Campion, has been awarded the festival Palme d'Or, and even then Campion shared it with another director.
