Zooey Deschanel Reveals Her Daughter's Unique Name
Zooey Deschanel loves to surprise us with major life news. "The New Girl" star revealed at the beginning of the year that she was pregnant with her first child — before we even realized she was dating anybody. Less than a week later, that boyfriend that flew under the radar (Rock the Kasbah producer Jacob Pechenik) became her fiancé — and it took us another three months after that to get a glimpse at the ring. And then in August, Zooey and Jacob revealed that they had welcomed a baby girl back in July — oh, and that they had secretly gotten married. Today, she's dropping another exciting bomb for us: Zooey Deschanel and her husband have finally revealed their daughter's name, and they didn't go with the current Hollywood trend of choosing a traditional boy's name for a girl (and vice versa). Instead, they went with a unique choice that is partially inspired by an...animal.
Zooey and Jacob have chosen Elsie Otter for their three-month-old daughter, the two shared with People at the Rock the Kasbah premiere last night in New York. "It's Elsie," Zooey told the magazine about her daughter's name. Jacob jumped in and shared the middle name: "Otter." In case there was any confusion on the middle name, Zooey explained that it is "like the animal" and Jacob chimed in "sea otter." What the couple did not clarify, though, was why they went with that selection — and what significance sea otters have for them (if anything at all).
While Otter might be a different choice, Elsie is slightly more popular: According to Nameberry, the girls' name, which means "pledged from God", is currently ranked 336th in popularity in the United States. It's a much more common pick in the U.K., where it's ranked 47th.
