Dong's Biography

As a young girl, Dong Mingzhu dreamed of joining the army to protect and defend her country. Widowed at 30, Dong went to South China to find work, leaving her son behind with her mother and becoming a saleswoman at Gree Electric. While she struggled with the balance of hard work and taking care of her son, her diligent work paid off as she was elected director of the sales department in 1994. In that year, sales revenue increased seven times, gaining Dong Mingzhu respect and admiration from her coworkers. Since she became president in 2001, Gree Electric has become the world’s largest specialized air conditioner company. Under her current leadership, Gree Electric is developing new technology, helping Chinese manufacturing evolve from “made in China” to “created in China.”
