Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords became known for her resilience in the face of violence after a shooting at a local event that left six dead and Giffords with severe brain injuries. In August 2011, just eight months after the incident, Giffords appeared back in Congress for a critical vote on the debt ceiling. Although Giffords resigned from Congress in 2012, she continues to fight gun violence. Attendees at The MAKERS Conference 2014 were fortunate enough to see Giffords take the stage and empower the audience with her message: "I'm still fighting to make the world a better place, and you can too. Strong women get things done. Be passionate. Be courageous. Be your best." Mark Kelly, Giffords' husband, is a retired astronaut and US Navy captain.
