Hope Solo is an American soccer goalkeeper, currently playing as a goalkeeper for the Seattle Sounders Women. Born in Richland, Washington, Solo showed an affinity for sports at an early age, playing on her first soccer team – coached by her father – at the age of 5. In high school, she realized that her soccer ability was her ticket to a college education, “I knew my family couldn’t afford to send me to college…soccer was my way out.” Her theory proved correct – she began playing for the University of Washington Huskies, and was a four-time All-Pac 10 selection, and a three-time NSCAA All-American.
In 2000, after playing on multiple U.S. Junior National soccer teams, Solo was chosen to play on the U.S. National team. Following college, Solo was drafted for the WUSA team Philadelphia Charge in 2003, before playing for the Kopparbergs/Göteborg in the Swedish Premier Division and the Olympique Lyonnais in the French First Division. In 2004, she was selected as an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team, but was promoted to starting goalkeeper in 2005. She was the starting goalkeeper for the United States in the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, winning the gold medal for the United States.
