Gwynne's Biography

Gwynne Shotwell is the President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX, a United States corporation providing space transport services to both government and commercial customers.

 

Born in Libertyville, Illinois, Shotwell received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University. Early in her career, she decided to work in the automotive industry and joined the Chrysler Corporation. In 1988, she left Chrysler and began working at the El Segundo research center of The Aerospace Corporation. There she worked in various areas of the company including technical work on military space research, developmental contracts, and thermal analysis.

 

After a 10-year tenure, she was given directorship of the space system division called Microcosm Incorporation. Four years later she became Vice President of Business Development of SpaceX. In her first year at SpaceX she made $5 billion revenue for the company.

 

Now, as the President of SpaceX, she manages all strategic relations, including the day-to-day operation for the high gear growth of the company. As of 2016, Shotwell is listed as the 76th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.
