Marvel Looks to Ava DuVernay to Possibly Direct Superhero Movie

The film and TV production company Marvel is looking to spotlight more diverse superheroes and wants “Selma” filmmaker Ava DuVernay to swoop in and save the day.

Among the movies DuVernay could possibly direct are “Black Panther” and “Captain Planet,” reports Vulture. According to the Wrap’s sources, “Black Panther” is slated for 2018, which makes it a more likely candidate for DuVernay to potentially direct.

So far, a woman filmmaker has not directed a Marvel movie. While Patty Jenkins was hired to direct “Thor: The Dark World,” she was replaced by Alan Taylor due to creative differences. Not only would DuVernay’s potential superhero movie make her their first female director, she would also be the studio’s first African-American to get behind the camera.
