Chelsea Handler Opens Up About How Roe v. Wade Affected Her Choice

In a recent blog post, comedian Chelsea Handler bravely tells readers about the choice she made during "a very bad stage" in her life. A choice, she reveals, to have two abortions when she was 16.

After exposing the very realness of finding out about an unintended pregnancy and deciding what to do next, Handler opens up about the laws surrounding women's reproductive rights.

"Like millions of women, I can live my life without an unplanned child born out of an unhealthy relationship because of Roe v. Wade," Handler writes. "Once you go forward in history, you don't go backward."

Handler is optimistic about the direction of reproductive rights in the U.S.

"It's like racism and sexism: People will be racist if they're innately built that way, but whether they can act on their racism or not is a separate issue."

And despite an increasing amount of backlash for the piece, Handler has also received praise for her honesty from women and girls who have had an abortion themselves, including fellow comedian Margaret Cho.
