This Is Why Feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie "Quietly" Gave Birth

Acclaimed Nigerian novelist and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is making a quiet but bold statement about pregnancy.

In an interview she announced she was breastfeeding, a shock for many who had no idea she was even pregnant.

So why did she keep the news quiet?

The "Americanah" and "We Should All Be Feminists" author explained in an interview she didn't even tell some of her friends she was pregnant because the act of "performing pregnancy" is a societal expectation where women must bear the brunt.

Unlike celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, whose body came under fire both before and after delivering her baby, Adichie decided to keep her pregnancy quiet to shield herself from the public scrutiny. Though she did nothing to hide her baby bump.

"I just feel like we live in an age when women are supposed to perform pregnancy. We don't expect fathers to perform fatherhood," she said.
