Gabrielle Giffords to Attend Navy Ship Christening in Her Honor

Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will be honored Saturday in a ship christening ceremony. The christening of the Navy's USS Gabrielle Giffords will take place on the Mobile River in Alabama.

Currently, fewer than 20 ships are named after women, and only a handful of them have been named after people who are living.

The Littoral Combat Ship was developed by Navy leaders and is a fast high-tech vessel capable of being configured for a variety of missions in shallow waters along the coast. The ship has been undergoing its development process for more than a decade and won't officially be commissioned into service until 2017, reports

Second Lady Jill Biden, the ship's sponsor, is among one of the ceremony's speakers. Vice President Joe Biden is rumored to attend the christening.
