Day 12, Irene Santiago: MAKERS Celebrates 20 Women of the 1995 UN Conference on Women

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1995 UN Conference on Women in Beijing, we're featuring 20 incredible women on MAKERS who participated in the largest ever international gathering of women.

Irene Santiago was the Executive Director of the 1995 Non-Governmental (NGO) Forum in Huairou, China which ran parallel to the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. With nearly 30,000 participants, Huairou was among the largest and most important gatherings of women activists in history. Santiago is among one of the very few women in the world to have participated in a formal peace negotiation, having played a central role in negotiating a lasting ceasefire between Muslim separatists and the Philippine government in 2004. A long-time peace and women’s rights advocate, Santiago was nominated in 2005 as one of 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize.  She is the lead convener of the #WomenSeriously, a global campaign to put women’s agency and leadership at the center of peace and security.

Check back here as we unveil more stories from these incredible women, as part of a special countdown culminating in the announcement of a MAKERS surprise.
